Differentiation in the Classroom Workshop

Students are most motivated and achieve the best learning results when they are presented with the material in a way that suits them best. This requires teachers to differentiate the material. Although differentiation is often perceived as time-consuming, differentiated teaching can actually save significant time by increasing learning outcomes.

During the workshop, various differentiation methods will be discussed and practiced, using your own teaching materials so you can put them into practice immediately. A simple and effective method is differentiation by learning level, where the basic material is covered first, followed by a formative assessment. Based on this, students can review or enrich their learning before the classroom summative assessment. Another powerful method is differentiation by thinking level, based on Bloom's taxonomy. This method teaches you to ask questions at six levels: remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating, and creating. This skill is particularly effective for independent work, as you can adapt questions on the fly to the student's level by raising or lowering the required thinking level. We will also demonstrate how ChatGPT can be optimally used for this. Other methods include differentiation based on work pace, support needs (pre- or re-teaching), learning style (e.g., Kolb), learning preference (e.g., VALK), and interest.

Participants will work on their personal experiences and challenges, ensuring that everything learned is directly applicable in their own classroom practice. The content of the "Differentiation in Class" workshop is therefore determined in accordance with the school's wishes and the participants' own experiences and learning aspirations. Because of this customized approach, the final content will always be unique, but the learning objectives below could serve as inspiration. Please note: we can offer each workshop as a standalone workshop or as part of a program throughout the school year. The learning objectives below will then only be the starting point for such a program.
