Workshop | Civic Media Literacy: A Professional Learning Workshop

In today’s rapidly evolving media landscape, educators play a critical role in helping students navigate information, discern reliable sources for credible information from misinformation, and understand the connections between media and democracy. The Center for Civic Education and the National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE) partnered to offer Civic Media Literacy, a professional learning workshop designed to equip teachers with strategies for integrating media literacy into civic education.

This interactive session explores these topics:
- How misinformation and media bias impact civic engagement and democratic participation.
- Practical classroom strategies for teaching students to critically analyze news and social media.
- The role of media in shaping public opinion, policy, and political discourse.
- Hands-on activities and resources that help students become informed, responsible digital citizens.

Program Objectives and Benefits

- Participants will learn strategies for integrating media literacy into civic education to help students effectively navigate information.
- Participants will learn about NAMLE’s definition of media literacy (access, analyze, evaluate, create, act), and why those terms are important for supporting students as they grow as citizens in a democratic society.
- Participants will understand the role of media literacy in fostering informed citizenship and its connection to constitutional democracy, with practical approaches for teaching these concepts in the classroom.
- Participants will explore a lesson by the Center for Civic Education on the compelling question, “Can I identify reliable media sources?” where they will learn more about the Center’s method for ESCAPEing Misinformation and the 5E Inquiry model.
