We no longer live only with media, but in media. To what extent will you be able to guide your target group through this complex mediatised world? How media savvy are you? The goal of this basic training is to brush up on your basic knowledge of how media, press and (alternative) journalism work and to let you discover how they influence our view of each other, the world and reality.
A constant stream of images comes at us in real time, via the worldwide web and social and traditional media. We create, share, meet, play and are informed. Meanwhile, opinions and public opinion are formed. Working with and for a generation growing up in this dynamic media society is complex and requires media-savvy professionals and teachers. It is essential to have knowledge about the workings, mechanisms and consequences of media life.
Media Literacy Expert
As an expert in the field of media literacy, Sound & Vision at School offers the basic training course 'Media Literacy and Citizenship'. The aim of the training is to gain basic knowledge about how media, press and (alternative) journalism work and how they influence our view of each other, the world and reality. We unravel the meaning of media and media culture and its impact on the social and political life of you and your students. After this training you will be able to have the conversation about this topic with children and young people.
What Can You Expect From This Training?
We'll start the day a conversation about what you think media literacy is, or should be. What skills are important to your target audience? And what skills do you yourself need to get started on this topic?
Then we will tell you more about the media wisdom competency model of Netwerk Mediawijsheid and the 'I-they' model that Beeld & Geluid uses at school for workshops.
The 'I' is about life in media and our own role as consumers and creators. By 'they' we mean media makers, from journalists to tech companies, and look at their methods and goals for being seen, heard and read and how this affects us. The “we” in the model represents the impact of media life on society. Media largely determine our perception of reality. But to what extent are they a reliable guide? In this section, we unravel the mechanisms behind major media events and media hypes.
Finally, we discuss how you can put the knowledge you have gained into practice in your work. Afterwards you will receive interesting material with in-depth knowledge and inspiration.
