Description

For: Leaders, governors, trustees, teachers

Aim: This webinar explains how to establish a culture of independent learning to help pupils develop resilience and self-reliance, and motivate them to prepare for the rigour of external examinations and the challenges they will face in their future lives.

Rationale: By developing a culture which encourages and rewards independence, schools and colleges can help their students to take charge of their own learning, draw upon their own intelligence and resourcefulness when learning or problem-solving, and build confidence in their own abilities.

Learning Outcomes

Outcome 1: Understanding the importance of developing independent learning in schools and colleges, and building students’ belief in their own abilities
Outcome 2: Appreciating the meaning of the term ‘independent learning’, from regulating and directing to evaluating their own learning
Outcome 3: Understanding how to develop skills which develop independence; including metacognition, self-regulation and self-efficacy inside and outside the classroom
Outcome 4: Understanding the importance of embedding a culture of feedback which develops students’ autonomy and ownership of their own learning
Outcome 5: Being able to plan a strategy to develop a culture of independence which improves students’ motivation, confidence and performance
