Training | Trauma-Informed Skills for Educators

About TISE

TISE is designed to teach K–12 teachers about how trauma can affect students and how teachers can effectively support students who have experienced stressful and traumatic events. TISE uses a strength-based and relational lens that highlights students’ resilience and promotes school connectedness and belonging.

The training includes the latest research on trauma and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), the neurological impact of these experiences on students, and how trauma can manifest in the classroom and affect student learning. Additionally, the in-service provides concrete strategies to help all adults on campus support students, including fostering a trauma-sensitive classroom climate, using trauma-informed de-escalation tactics, and fostering trauma responsiveness throughout the school community.

TISE is available both online and in person.

Evidence

Developed through an academic-community partnership, TISE is built on the latest neurological and psychological research that informs best practices to support youth exposed to trauma and adversity.

A preliminary evaluation of the in-person TISE training found that the curriculum improved educators’ knowledge about trauma and increased their confidence engaging with students affected by trauma. Among the trainees, 98% indicated that they would recommend the curriculum to a colleague. Additionally, a study of the on-demand TISE course found improvements in educator knowledge about trauma and their self-efficacy in using trauma-responsive approaches.

Implementation

The online TISE curriculum includes eight modules that provide concrete strategies that help educators support students in more trauma-responsive ways, such as by fostering a trauma-sensitive classroom climate, communicating with students about trauma, de-escalating disruptive incidents, and fostering trauma responsiveness throughout the school community.

The curriculum takes approximately 2 hours to complete. The course can be taken at each user’s pace and picks up wherever a user left off.

Training

No prior training is required to take the TISE course. The TISE curriculum is appropriate for any adult who interacts with students on a school campus.
