Executive Functions, What Can We Do With Them?

Executive functions is a collective term for thought processes (functions) that are important for carrying out (the execution) of social and goal-oriented behavior.

Executive functions include the ability to:
- To resist impulses.
- To make efficient plans.
- To deal with changes.
- Actively use your memory.
- To have insight into your own behavior and attitude.
- Dealing effectively with emotions.

These are skills that enable us to organize our behavior well, so that various tasks succeed. We can think of arriving on time, being able to pack your bag, and being able to concentrate on a task. It is possible that something goes wrong with these skills in children and they are not able to properly manage their behavior. This manifests itself, for example, in impulsiveness, being chaotic, not being able to get to work, and low scores, while they do have an average to high IQ. Time to take action and not label a child with a disorder, such as ADHD.

Executive functions largely determine school success. Perhaps even more than intelligence.

Parts:
- An overview of the different executive functions.
- Guidelines for determining strengths and weaknesses of executive functions in children.
- Handles to stimulate the various executive functions.

Goal and result:
The training provides insight into what executive functions are and how a teacher can use them in the classroom. The difficulties per disorder and per child differ in the classroom, but a general picture can certainly be sketched. By looking at executive functions, one gains insight into and understanding of problems that children with, for example, ADHD, ASD, and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) have and there are many possibilities for an appropriate approach per child.
