Dealing With Bullying in the Classroom!
Bullying is a persistent problem in education. It occurs more often than teachers can see. About eighty percent of bullying occurs outside the teacher's sight. It happens in the schoolyard, the sports field, the locker room at the gym, the hallway, the toilet, but also online via social media. Schools and parents cannot ignore the problem of bullying. Recent stories in the media also make it clear that bullying in schools must be tackled. But how can you, as a school and as a teacher, tackle bullying behavior?
Bullying can be seen as a group problem because all students in the group play a role in bullying. Students often do not realize that they also play a role in bullying, even if they do nothing. Bullying must therefore be tackled with the help of all those involved: the perpetrator(s), the victim, the teacher, the parents, and the other children. The other children can be seen as followers, outsiders or helpers.
