About This Resource
Helping students develop their leadership abilities starts with a clear understanding of what leadership is. Through years of experience in leadership, character education, social and emotional learning, and teaching personal and social responsibility, eight key traits have been identified to guide students’ understanding of leadership:
Leaders care deeply.
Leaders communicate effectively.
Leaders pay attention.
Leaders stay focused.
Leaders show strength.
Leaders empower others.
Leaders inspire trust.
Leaders keep learning.
To support teaching and help students explore and understand these leadership traits, this set of nine Student Leadership Traits Posters has been created.
Each trait poster includes:
A visual representation of the trait
A detailed description of how the trait supports leadership
Three “look-fors” (observable behaviors associated with the trait)
The Leadership Trait Posters can be used to bring an educational lens to various activities and experiences in physical education. This approach pairs well with Jigsaw Learning and Sport Education methods.
The goal is to provide students with opportunities to explore, reflect on, make sense of, and apply leadership traits as they progressively develop their leadership capacity.
Learning comes from doing—students cannot be expected to develop as leaders without opportunities to practice leadership in real-world contexts.
These posters are designed to help bring leadership education into schools, creating meaningful learning experiences and discussions with students.
Happy Teaching!
