How Does the Exercise Box Work?

Teaching materials and teaching methods in the Netherlands are based on the guidelines and core objectives of the SLO (Foundation for Curriculum Development).

The starting point of the exercise box is that it can be used within any regular teaching method. This means that the exercise box is an enrichment of the existing offering and is not a stand-alone teaching method.

The core objectives of the SLO have been used as a guideline in the development of the exercise box. As the name of the exercise box already shows, it can be used to work on consciously chosen learning goals in a moving and energetic way. These goals are practiced while moving, repeated, and therefore automated.

Each Exercise Box is in line with the goals of the relevant school years. The goals can be found on the game cards. Each Movement Box contains about 80 game cards. A game card describes the purpose, the required game materials and contains short instructions to get started with an activity easily and quickly.

In almost all cases, the activities require space to move. This can be done, for example, in a wide hallway, a playroom, or gymnasium, but preferably in an outdoor area.

It is important that practice/repetition with the exercise box is preceded by instruction on the relevant learning objective. The professional can assess whether the students are ready to further practice the learning objective in a moving manner.
