Description

The Rescue a Pet Project-Based Learning: Math & Reading resource engages students in a meaningful, real-world mission to rescue and adopt a pet while integrating math, reading, writing, and social studies. Students solve real-world math problems, read informational texts about pet care, and write persuasive letters to qualify for adoption, earning a Pet Adoption Certificate upon completion.

Available in Google Slides (digital) and black-and-white PDF, the project includes three pets of increasing difficulty, Harry the Hamster, Fergie the Cat, and Oliver the Dog. Students practice economics by earning and budgeting money for pet adoption and supplies, apply comprehension strategies, and complete simulated tasks. An enrichment option allows students to create their own rescue project, including original word problems and informational texts. Ideal for centers, enrichment, early finishers, whole-class or small-group instruction, this highly engaging unit aligns with multiple CCSS and keeps students motivated across subject areas.
