Description

The Fifth Grade Engineering Design unit serves as a valuable supplement to the Grade 5 Physical Sciences curriculum, particularly focusing on the Structure and Properties of Matter. Students investigate the properties of various materials and their environmental impacts, especially concerning synthetic materials. Through engaging activities, they explore biodegradable alternatives and examine the fabrics in their clothing, observing how different materials interact with water. Utilizing the Engineering Design process, students define, design, and test a waterproof product made from natural materials. Each lesson comes with an overview and links to relevant NGSS Performance Expectations.
