Description
Students in grades 1-6 create a wooden ruler using simple materials such as paint stir sticks or thin scrap wood along with tools like a handsaw, sandpaper, measuring tape, and paint. The project develops measuring accuracy while introducing math and ADST concepts through hands-on construction. Students measure and cut the wood to size, sand the edges smooth, paint and decorate the ruler, and carefully mark metric, imperial, or combined measurement units using pencil, a utility knife, and paint or marker. Optional extensions include adding decorative designs, creating oversized growth-chart rulers, making customized fishing or crabbing rulers based on legal size limits, and building other measuring tools such as protractors or squares.
