Description
Students investigate how sound travels through solids, liquids, and gases through simple hands-on experiments. They make predictions, carry out the activities, and compare their observations to see how sound behaves in different materials. The activity also connects these ideas to engineering by showing how sound affects the design of spaces such as classrooms, libraries, theaters, and concert halls. Students then consider how engineers could use sound to communicate through different materials. To finish, they work as engineering teams to draw and describe a communication system for sending emergency messages between futuristic cities through air, water, or solid rock.
