Lesson Idea | Stewardship and Sustainability
About This Lesson
Students will generate an understanding of the concepts “stewardship” and “sustainability” in relation to human activities. Students will assess the positive and negative impacts of agriculture and other human activities on the land. Finally, students will identify how farmers are considered stewards of the land and explain environmental practices that they do to promote stewardship and sustainability.
Materials Needed
- Computer, internet access, projector, speakers, and screen
- Appendix A – The Earth as an Apple and an Apple, cutting board and paring knife
- Optional: You Tube video Apple As Planet Earth,
- Appendix B – The Environment: Water and 1L container of water, measuring cup, container to pour water into
- Chart paper, prepared with t-chart titled “Impacts on Environment” and “How to Minimize”
- Paper and pencil/pens
- YouTube video, Journey 2050: Best Management Practices
- Farm Food 360
- YouTube video, Stewards of the Land
- Appendix C – Daily Water Use
Assessment and Evaluation
- Observe student input when discussing impacts on the environment.
- Check group’s t-charts for accuracy and level of understanding.
- Collect student research notes, blueprint, production explanation, and farm best practices for evaluation.
