Elementary school Lesson Idea | Speaking for 3rd Grade ESL Students

Objective:

This lesson plan is to help students practice asking and answering questions using new vocabulary, while building conversational and listening skills through interactive activities and peer interactions.

Lesson Plan Outline:

• Review the vocabulary words that will help with the activity
• Mystery Object guessing game
• Song activity
• Peer interviews

Warm-Up: Vocabulary Introduction

Before starting the activities, introduce useful vocabulary to help students describe objects and ask/answer questions. These words will be practiced with gestures and written on the board.

Vocabulary Words:
• Big
• Small
• Round
• Soft
• Hard
• Smooth
• Rough
• Favorite
• Like
• Don’t like
• Red, Orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, black, white

Activity 1: Mystery Object (Guessing Game)

Students take turns picking an object from a bag and describing it to their classmates.
• The class guesses what the object is.
• Each student will have a turn to pick an object out of the bag
• This teaches students to engage in conversations in a fun way
• The student picking out of the hat will describe the object, such as this object is hard, small, round, furry, etc

The other students will not be able to see this object (have the student picking the object out of the bag turn away from the class)
Song Activity: "Do You Like…?"

Before Activity 2, play an interactive song reinforcing asking and answering preference questions."Do You Like Broccoli Ice Cream?" by Super Simple Songs.
1. Listen & Repeat: Play the song once and have students listen.
2. Sing Along: Play it again, encouraging students to sing along with the "Yes, I do! / No, I don’t!" responses. (Have the words to the song playing on the board)
3. After listening to the song twice, have students turn to a partner and ask, "Do you like ___?" using food, animals, or other simple categories.

This will warm them up for the interview activity by making question and answer exchanges fun and natural

Before starting the second activity, introduce simple sentence structures to help students during the interview. These sentences will be written on the board and kept on the board during the activity:

Question Starters:

• What is your favorite ______?
• Do you like ______?
• How many ______ do you have?
• What color is your ______?
• What do you do after school?

Answer Starters:

• My favorite ______ is ______.
• Yes, I do! / No, I don’t.
• I have ______.
• My ______ is ______.
• After school, I ______.

Student Contribution: Students will brainstorm additional sentences, which the teacher will also write on the board.

Activity 2: Interview a Friend

• Students pair up and take turns interviewing each other using the questions and sentences on the board.
• After gathering information, they prepare to share what they learned.

Exit Ticket:

Each student will introduce their partner and share what they learned about them.
Example:
"This is Maria. Her favorite color is blue, and she has a pet cat."
Encourage students to listen actively and ask follow-up questions.
