About This Guide

This document is a companion guide to the Ontario Science Centre’s video series on play-based learning, produced in partnership with the Ontario Ministry of Education.

The Ontario Science Centre's "Grade 3 Activity Ideas: Soils in the Environment" is a play-based learning guide designed to engage Grade 3 students in hands-on science activities. This resource complements the Centre’s video series on playful classrooms and aligns with the Ontario Ministry of Education’s emphasis on creativity and innovation in early learning.

Overview of Activities

The guide includes three interactive activities:

Vermicomposter Exploration
Students observe red wiggler worms in a vermicomposter to learn about their anatomy, ecology, and behavior. They use tools like magnifying glasses and popsicle sticks to interact with the worms, fostering curiosity about soil ecosystems.

Kinetic Sand
Students create and manipulate homemade kinetic sand using materials such as play sand, cornstarch, dish soap, and white glue. This activity encourages sensory exploration and dramatic play, allowing students to build structures and simulate natural environments.

Seed Balls
Students make seed balls by mixing soil, clay, and seeds, then forming them into balls. Once dried, these can be planted to observe plant growth, teaching students about soil composition, plant life cycles, and environmental stewardship.

Outdoor Learning Emphasis

Each activity includes suggestions for outdoor implementation, encouraging students to interact directly with their environment. For example, observing worms in natural settings or planting seed balls in a garden. The guide emphasizes respect for living things and promotes environmental stewardship.
