Elementary school Lesson Idea | Listening Lesson Plan 3rd Grade

Level: 3rd Grade

Objective:

Students will develop listening comprehension skills through engaging activities such as answering questions based on a story, practicing punctuation, and participating in a fun scavenger hunt.

I. Introduction to the Lesson

Goal: To introduce the topic of listening activities and prepare students for the lesson.
Introduction:
Greet students and briefly explain that today's lesson will focus on listening carefully to stories, sentences, and instructions.
Tell students they will answer questions, finish sentences, and go on a scavenger hunt!

II. First Activity: Listening to a Short Story and Answering Questions

Goal: Practice listening comprehension by having students answer questions about a story they hear.
Teacher Reads the Short Story:
• Read a short, simple story aloud to the class. Choose a familiar or relatable topic
• Example Story: “Tom and his dog Max went to the park. Tom threw a ball, and Max ran after it. They played all afternoon and had a lot of fun.”

Students Answer Questions:
After reading, ask the students the following 5 simple questions related to the story:
1. Who went to the park?
2. What did Tom throw?
3. Where did Tom and Max go?
4. When did they play (what time of day)?
5. Why did Max run after the ball?
6. Encourage students to answer aloud or write their answers

III. Second Activity: Finishing Sentences with Punctuation

Goal: Improve listening and writing skills by focusing on punctuation in sentences.
Teacher or Volunteers Read Sentences Aloud:
• Read simple sentences aloud, leaving the last part blank (without punctuation). Students will listen carefully and choose the correct punctuation mark to complete the sentence.
• Example sentences:
• “Tom ran to the park ___” (Students will fill in with a period: “Tom ran to the park.”)
• “Can you help me ___” (Students will fill in with a question mark: “Can you help me?”)
• “I love ice cream ___” (Students will fill in with an exclamation mark: “I love ice cream!”)
• Student Participation:
• Have volunteers or students in pairs take turns listening and finishing the sentences with the correct punctuation mark.
• Provide options on the board (period, question mark, exclamation mark)
