Lesson Idea | Kid Spark Engineering Design Challenge 2
This lesson is about guiding kids through the Engineering Design Process as they work in teams to design, build, test, and improve the tallest structure possible that can support the weight of twelve thin books. Students take on specific roles, Organizer, Technician, Programmer, and Reporter, to practice teamwork while brainstorming, planning, testing, modifying, and retesting their designs. The activity uses ROK Blocks, Foundational Fluencies, or STEM Pathways kits along with common classroom supplies and connects to NGSS standards for grades 4 and up. It is intended for upper elementary students (grades 3–5) and provides a 60- to 90-minute hands-on experience that builds problem-solving, collaboration, and real-world engineering skills.
