Description

“Gliders” explains how gliders or sailplanes stay aloft using gravity, lift, drag, and thrust. Students begin by testing how a rolled paper ball and a flat sheet of paper fall to observe the effect of surface area and lift. The text describes how wings help birds and gliders fly through surface area, shape, and angle of attack. It also explains Bernoulli’s principle and how thermals, caused by warm ground heating the air, allow gliders to stay airborne for hours. In the student activity, students design, build, test, and modify paper gliders to achieve maximum flight time while exploring how wing size, shape, and atmospheric conditions affect flight.
