Lesson Idea | Engineering for Earthquakes

Designed for students in grades 3 to 5, this resource focuses on structural engineering and the forces involved during natural hazards like earthquakes. Students will observe simulations that demonstrate the effects of seismic activity and apply strong engineering principles to create structures capable of withstanding simulated earthquakes. The curriculum emphasizes critical thinking as students compare their designs, reflect on their effectiveness, and iterate to improve their solutions. Developed in preparation for the 2019 Tech Challenge, this resource encourages collaboration and innovation among students as they tackle real-world engineering problems through the design process.
