Lesson Idea | Engineering an Animal’s Survival
Students will focus on designing prosthetics for injured animals. They begin by selecting an animal from a set of task cards that describe various injuries affecting their survival in the wild. Working in pairs, they research the chosen animal and its habitat. They will create a model habitat and crafting 3D prosthetic prototypes using modeling clay. This innovative curriculum aligns with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), emphasizing real-world applications of engineering. Students learn how engineers create custom prosthetics and safe environments for injured animals, such as a toucan with a damaged beak that was helped through 3D printing. By the end of the activity, students will understand how habitats support animal needs and recognize the impact of technology on animal rehabilitation.
