Students assemble the lightsaber using a straw, an LED, a coin cell battery, and electrical tape, then test it by squeezing the handle to complete the circuit. The activity explains that the LED lights up only when connected with the correct polarity because it allows electricity to flow in only one direction. It also describes why a separate resistor is not needed when using a coin cell battery, since the battery's internal resistance naturally limits the current.
