Description
This activity explores static electricity by having students build and use a simple balloon electroscope. Students rub two balloons with a wool cloth, suspend them, observe how the balloons repel each other, and then use water or a damp hand to remove the charges. Rubbing the balloons transfers electrons to the balloons, giving them a negative charge while the wool becomes positively charged. The activity also explains that damp or humid weather makes static electricity experiments more difficult because moisture carries charges away from objects.
