Game | Wordmates: Composition

Movement game Woordmaatjes: composition is a game in which grade 3 (and grade 4) students practice reading and making compound words: compositions. In this game, they read words and look for their “word buddy,” with whom they form a compound (e.g., bike-bell). Walk around the classroom and when you come across your word buddy, write down the composition. This game consists of 50 word cards, the back of which is also printed, so 100 (!) words in this game.

Variation on this game: In this active tapping game, all students are given a word card. Two balls are brought into play that all players can throw someone off with (someone's it, no one's it). When a player is thrown off he/she goes to the side of the field. Players there look for another player who is also 'off ' and read his/her word. Then they think of a compound that includes this word (e.g., 'swim', compound 'pool'). The other player does the same the other way around. If they manage to think of an existing word, they name the word aloud to the teacher (game leader) and those players are free again. They turn over their card (on the back is a different word) and rejoin the game.

You prefer to play this game on the (school) square, or in the gymnasium so there is enough room for the players to move around.
