Living Calculator: Partial Sum is an exercise game where students in grades 5 and 6 work in pairs to practice partial sums up to 100. Before the game starts, each pair draws a calculator (numbers 0 to 9 and operations +, -, : and =) on the square/sidewalk using sidewalk chalk.
Each pair then receives a stack of sums cards, the number depending on the size of the group (game contains 50 cards). One player of the pair reads the partial sum aloud and jumps on the numbers and the operation. The other player solves the partial sum out loud and jumps on “=” and then on the answer. The first player checks the answer (is on the back of the card). Switch roles after 3 sums.
When the cards “run out,” the pair swap cards with another pair.
