Course Facilitator
Christina Tondevold
The Recovering Traditionalist & Build Math Minds Facilitator
Christina Tondevold is a math educator, author, and proud mom of four who is passionate about helping children experience mathematics in meaningful and engaging ways. Before becoming a parent, she discovered research that completely changed how she viewed math, shaping the way she would later support her own children’s learning. Christina describes herself as a Recovering Traditionalist because she once relied heavily on memorized procedures as both a student and a teacher. While she could follow algorithms, she struggled with mental math and problem-solving, and she later realized that teaching straight from a textbook wasn’t enough to help all students succeed. Today, Christina is a strong advocate for growth mindset, believing that mistakes and productive struggle are essential parts of learning. She encourages students and educators to move beyond step-by-step instructions and embrace deeper mathematical thinking.
Description
Want the missing piece to build your students' math fluency?
Join in with other educators for Build Math Minds newly released online course: The Flexibility Formula with Christina Tondevold.
You are ready to change how you teach math and how your students think about math!
• You have kiddos who have 'learned' the addition strategies, yet still revert back to using their fingers.
• You are looking for something that will help you with those kiddos who 'just don't get it'.
• And you want to do all this and make it fun!
At the end of this course, you will have:
• A clearly defined progression of what number sense looks like and how it impacts students' fluency with addition and subtraction
• Peace of mind in knowing you are heading in the right direction
• More of a conceptual understanding of the math you teach. If you are like Christina, you were taught the procedural steps of math but not the understanding behind them.
• More time, because this course will give you pre-made games and parent letters along with lists of activities to help you build number sense for your kiddoos. No more endlessly searching on Pinterest and TpT wondering if what you are finding is any good.
The Missing Piece in Math Fluency Work is Building Kids’ Flexibility
Flexibility with numbers is something we cannot directly teach to kids. It comes from the experiences they have with numbers and the connections they see between numbers. The Flexibility Formula helps K-2nd grade teachers learn how to help kids catch flexibility so you can build math minds and not just create calculators.
• Clear & Defined Path
Most textbooks do not have number sense built into their program. You will learn the progression of number sense development and lots of ideas to help you develop your plan of implementation.
• Conceptual Understanding
It's hard to teach kids the why behind the math if we never learned it ourselves. Let Christina help you build the connections so that you have the conceptual understandings to help your students understand the why behind the procedures.
• Love of Teaching Math
For too many educators, math is not their favorite subject. If that is you, this course will help you learn to love teaching math.
What You'll Learn in the Flexibility Formula
There are four parts to building students’ flexibility which make up the 4 modules in the course:
• Module 1: Understanding
In this module you will build your understanding of the 8 Number Sense Concepts that build students' flexibility with numbers.
• Module 2: Observing
Then you'll learn how to observe students to see what concepts they understand and which ones they are still building.
• Module 3: Connecting
Seeing how the number sense concepts connect together and connect with other math concepts helps determine.
• Module 4: Experiencing
The experiences you provide students to help them build their flexibility. You will discuss the types of experiences you should provide students and you will get lots that you can use right away with your students.
The Flexibility Formula K-2 provides an opportunity to learn the fundamental mathematical progressions underlying students’ understanding of numbers to build their flexibility when operating with numbers. Topics will include child cognitive development, early numeracy and number relationships, assessing students’ understanding, and providing mathematical experiences that build students’ flexibility and fluency with math in K-2nd grade.
Specifically, the course will address the following concepts:
4 Early Numeracy Concepts (Subitizing, Verbal Counting, Object Counting, and Cardinality) and the 4 Number Relationships (Spatial Relationships, One/Two More & Less, Benchmark Numbers, and Part-Part-Whole).
