EDUO 9950: The Brain Science of Regulation
Trauma significantly impacts brain development.Cultivate a deeper neurological understanding of the trauma-affected brain. Critically analyze emotional responses from a trauma-informed lens while planning to teach students about the brain. Gain an understanding of various school-specific regulatory strategies.
Syllabus
This course is one in a series titled, Trauma Informed Practices. The courses are not sequential. They can be taken in

Course Assignments/Modules
Assignment 1: Introduction
Write a 1-page statement of purpose.
Assignment 2: Trauma, Stress, and the Brain
Examine the three parts of the brain that are important in a trauma-affected brain in an effort to better
understand the various functions. Using the mini lesson template provided, plan to briefly teach one topic from
several choices.
Assignment 3: Regulated vs Dysregulated
Read about what it means for the brain to be regulated and how it’s different from exhibiting self-control.
Assignment 4: Regulatory Strategies
Read about self-regulation from a leader in the field. Then, select and plan for two self-regulation strategies
that could be introduced in your classroom.
Assignment 5: Final Thoughts
Write 1-2 paragraphs with a reflection of your learning. What was the most impactful piece of brain science that
you discovered? What information are you most excited to share out with your students? Why?
