Under- and Overstimulation

In our modern society, children are constantly exposed to an overload of stimuli. For some children, such as neurodiverse children or children with special educational needs, this can lead to under- or overstimulation. Effectively supporting these children requires insight into sensory processing and practical skills to manage it.

This course offers an in-depth introduction to sensory processing, specifically focused on recognizing signs of under- and overstimulation and implementing interventions. You will not only learn how sensory processing works but also gain insight into the neurobiological basis of sensory sensitivity. We will explore the influence of ASD, ADHD, and hypersensitivity on sensory processing, so you have a solid foundation in supporting children and young people who experience over- or understimulation.

You will also learn to independently develop a Sensory Arousal Profile, which identifies a child's specific sensory sensitivities. Using this profile, you can develop targeted interventions and adjustments that help children and young people improve their sensory processing and maintain balance, both in the classroom and in everyday life.

This course will teach you how to recognize and manage both understimulation and overstimulation. It's suitable for teachers, lecturers, child coaches, youth counselors, and parents or caregivers who want to support children of all ages (both primary and secondary) in healthy sensory processing.

Learning Objectives

After completing this course, you will be able to:
• Recognize under- and overstimulation in children and distinguish specific signals for each stimulus category.
• Gain insight into how stimulus sensitivity varies in children with various sensitivities (high sensitivity, ASD, and ADHD).
• Select and implement effective interventions to support children's sensory balance, both in the classroom and at home.
• Independently develop a stimulus profile based on observations and analyses, allowing you to develop specific adjustments to promote healthy sensory processing.

Experiential Learning with Practical Assignments

This course isn't just theoretical; it also includes practical assignments that allow you to immediately put what you've learned into practice. For example, you'll create a stimulus profile for a child, experiment with various tools, and observe their effect on stimulus behavior. These assignments will give you direct experience with stimulus processing and allow you to apply your knowledge immediately.

Who is This Course Suitable For?

This course is invaluable for anyone who wants to further develop their skills in working with or raising sensitive children and young people. Whether you work with them in the classroom, in a practical setting, or at home, this course will provide you with valuable insights and skills to effectively support children and young people.

Completion and Certificate of Participation

After completing and submitting the assignments, you will receive an official Certificate of Participation, which recognizes your expertise in sensory processing in children. This certificate supports your professional development and confirms that you are well-prepared to effectively guide children in their sensory processing.
