Description

Most, if not all, teachers have students in their classes who are unmotivated to participate in learning, or students whose motivation is less than optimal. Preparing ‘bells and whistles’ activities to engage your students is time consuming and any motivational benefits are often short-lived.

However, simple changes to everyday classroom routines can make a substantial impact on your students’ motivational states, resulting in increased persistence, engagement and resilience.

Discover the science behind motivation and learn evidence-based strategies that will help you to meet your students’ motivational needs. As a bonus, you will also learn how to motivate yourself to achieve your own personal and professional goals!

Course Content

1. Lesson One: Introduction to Motivation
This introductory lesson provides both a definition of motivation and introduces some common misconceptions, laying the foundations for a deeper exploration of motivation in the following lessons.

2. Lesson Two: Key Theories of Motivation
This lesson looks at five key areas of research in motivation:

- Expectancy, value and cost
- Self-determination Theory/Autonomy and Control
- Theories of Intelligence
- Self-Efficacy
- Goals

3. Lesson Three: Sources of Motivation
Lesson Three looks at sources of motivation. In particular, students’ beliefs, goals, skills, feedback, attributions, and expectations.

4. Lesson Four: Review
This review lesson acts as a bridge between the previous lessons’ theoretical learning and the following lesson’s focus on applying theoretical knowledge in real life teaching contexts.

5. Lesson Five: Strategies for the Classroom
Lesson Five suggests practical approaches to improving students’ motivation through each of the six sources of motivation.

6. Lesson Six: Resources
This lesson consists of information sheets, video, articles, weblinks and suggested further reading which teachers can use to further their own understanding of motivation.
