Facilitator

Tammy Schamuhn, R. Psych., ICP Co-Founder
Tammy Schamuhn is a Registered Psychologist, Registered Play Therapist, Registered Play Therapist Supervisor, and the Co-Founder of the Institute of Child Psychology. She has a Bachelors of Education from the University of Alberta and practiced as an Elementary Teacher in Canada before going on to do her Masters degree in Psychology. She is also the Founder and Executive Director of Family Counselling Centres where she and her team treat children, adolescents, and their families through the use of a variety of types of therapies. Her clinic also utilized animals in their practice, as Tammy has developed a canine-assisted and equine-assisted therapy programs for treating children and teens. Furthermore, she also runs an extensive clinical internship program at her clinic where she trains masters-level interns who are training to become child psychologists, and provides clinical supervision to newly licensed provisional psychologists in the province of Alberta. She approaches her clinical and consultative work with parents and professionals with an attachment and neurobiological lens: all of her work is based on the neurology of the brain and how attachment is integral to adaptive functioning of both children and adults.

Attachment is the deep emotional bond between a caregivers and children. This paradigm also continues to endure and shift into the arena of adult relationships and has a lasting impact on our psychology. An attachment relationship that is characterized by warm, sensitive, attuned, and consistent caregiving lays the foundation for resilience, security, compassion, emotion intelligence, and healthy relationship— it is considered the hallmark of psychological well-being.

In this course, attendees will learn about the foundational history of attachment research, develop a better understand attachment styles in both children and adults and outcomes related to each style, how the brain’s development is contingent on the quality of care a child receives, and interventions that promote a more secure attachment style in children.

Parents and caregivers will walk away with a holistic and comprehensive view of attachment, and understand to be more intentional in their day to day interactions with their child.


Objectives

- Explore early research in attachment
- Define maternal deprivation and understand how lack of quality attachments can lead to failure to thrive
- Describe the primary attachment styles in both children and adults, and the outcomes related to each
- Learn about how attachment is related to neurological development in children
- Explore how ruptures occur in the attachment relationship
- Cultivate a greater understanding of their own attachment history and how it impacts their ability to parent
- Define a variety of evidence-based attachment interventions
