Facilitator

Michael Hilkemeijer

As a teacher for over 15 years, Michael has taught and learned about the effective integration of technology in education through his teaching practices and studies. He has a Master’s in Education (ICTE) that focuses on effective instructional design, and for over the past 10 years, he has studied literature and case studies on the art of successful technology integration in education - the development of ICT capability. Through this process, he has written many articles, both online and in national magazines, on the best practices for teachers in early childhood and primary education to develop ICT capability. One of which is the continual support of teachers in their professional learning.

Course Objective

You will learn how to enhance literacy in your curriculum with ICT by implementing sound literacy-ICT teaching strategies boosted by teacher competence, clear goals, and the development of purposeful and meaningful Literacy-ICT activities. In addition, you will gain the expertise you need in order to develop 21st-century skills in your classroom practices as you collaborate and reflect on your learning experiences.

Critical Questions

What is purpose-driven, effective literacy-technology integration?
What does it look like? Sound like?
How do we most effectively integrate technology into the English curriculum?
How can we effectively meet the needs of ALL learners with the integration of technology?
In what ways can reflective practice and ongoing assessment specific to technology integration inform instruction?

The Nature of Literacy With ICT Integration

Today, the impact of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has numerous implications for literacy teaching and learning. As a teacher, you are not only challenged to integrate ICT into traditional aspects of literacy instruction but also to engage students in emerging technological literacies.

Teaching Primary Literacy With ICT in the Australian Curriculum English KLA

"ICT capability is an important component of the Australian Curriculum: English. Students use ICT when they interpret and create print, visual, and multimodal texts. They use communication technologies when they conduct research online and collaborate and communicate with others electronically. In particular, they use ICT to access, analyze, modify and create hybrid, digital and multimodal texts, using digital publishing." (ACARA)

This online PD workshop is, therefore, suitable for Primary Literacy teaching.
