After completing Weet wat je eet, students indicate that they want to take or have taken various steps regarding their own eating habits. For example, they plan to drink more water. They also indicate that after completing the lessons, they started consuming fewer sugary drinks and sweet and savoury snacks. In addition, students say they eat less meat. According to the Wheel of Five, these are all important steps towards healthy and sustainable eating.
The effects were measured among more than 600 students in the lower years of vmbo-tl, havo and vwo. For the study, they were divided into 2 groups: some of the students completed the Weet wat je eet lessons and the others did not. Both groups completed a questionnaire twice about various behavioural determinants and behaviours relating to healthy, safe and sustainable food.
The researchers asked the students who had completed Weet wat je eet what they thought of the educational package. They considered the fact that Weet wat je eet is an online educational package to be a strong point. They also liked the types of questions, the alternation between text and questions, the topics and the layout.
Content and design revised
Weet wat je eet is a free educational package about nutrition for secondary vocational and senior secondary vocational education. Healthy, safe and sustainable eating are all covered in the 6 online lessons. Students also work on their own eating habits. The lessons consist of short pieces of information, videos, knowledge and reflection questions, and practical assignments.
Weet wat je eet was revised in terms of content in 2022. For example, the number of lessons was reduced from 10 to 6 and the information was described more concisely. Sustainability, for instance, is also covered more prominently as a topic. In addition, the design was completely renewed. More than 15,000 students have completed the lessons since the revision.
