The schools edition of World Cleanup Day was organized for the first time in 2020. For the schools edition, primary schools, secondary schools and out-of-school care centers are called upon to organize a cleanup campaign. World Cleanup Day offers special lessons, competitions and prizes for this purpose.
For primary schools
For students in grades 4 through 8, World Cleanup Day has a lesson about the challenges and solutions to plastic pollution. You can cover the lesson with your class before they start the cleanup campaign.
During the cleanup campaign, the students are divided into groups. The students keep track of what they find on tally sheets. This is important because Plastic Soup Foundation uses this information to point out the responsibilities of industry and politics. World Cleanup Day calls this citizen science, or burgerwetenschap in Dutch.
World Cleanup Day has a fun surprise in store for primary schools that submit a great photo in addition to the total list.

For secondary schools
Especially for the World Cleanup Day schools edition, there is a lesson focusing on litter and its consequences for people, animals and nature. During this lesson, the cleanup campaign is explained. The students will not only clean up but also record what they have found using an app.

Photo challenge for secondary schools
On the World Cleanup Day schools edition, students in secondary education are challenged to take part in a photo challenge! Plastic Soup Foundation will award a prize to the student or group of students (max. 4) who submit the most creative photo of their World Cleanup Day action to [email protected].
DJ Sam Feldt live in your schoolyard!
If you organize a cleanup campaign with the entire (secondary) school, you have a chance to win a performance by our ambassador, DJ Sam Feldt, as a kick-off for World Cleanup Day. This way, you can get your cleanup campaign off to a spectacular start and the school can celebrate the beginning of the new school year!
Is your entire school taking part in the World Cleanup Day schools edition? Then send an email to [email protected] and maybe Sam Feldt will soon be standing in your schoolyard.
For out-of-school care centers
Out-of-school care centers can also organize a cleanup campaign! World Cleanup Day has put together a number of fun videos and an action plan so that out-of-school care centers can easily organize a cleanup campaign.
