What is the Louis Bolk Institute looking for?

In this research project, the Louis Bolk Institute wants to investigate how well greening the schoolyard can be combined with food education and what effect this has on primary school pupils. To this end, the institute is looking for:

  1. Primary schools that are going to green their schoolyard during the coming school year.
  2. Primary schools that are going to green their schoolyard during the coming school year and are going to link food education to this: gardening, tasting and cooking.
  3. Primary schools that are interested in greening their schoolyard, but are not yet going to do so during the coming school year and would welcome some tips from other schools.

What does participation involve?

The intention is that during the period from September 2022 to May 2023, you will implement any changes to the schoolyard and food education and share your experiences through (digital) questionnaires. There are two types of questionnaires:

  1. A questionnaire for the school team and parents, to be completed before the end of the school year, about feasibility, appreciation and the perceived impact on the children.
  2. A questionnaire for the pupils, to be completed at the beginning and end of the school year, about food and being outdoors.

Each questionnaire takes only about 10 to 15 minutes to complete. At the beginning and end of the school year, we will also carry out measurements in the schoolyard together with the children.

If desired, the Louis Bolk Institute can provide materials, such as information that you can use for teachers and parents.

Why participate?

  1. You will take part in research that helps other schools green their schoolyard, start a vegetable garden and link experiential food education to it. Your experiences and insights will provide guidance for other schools that want to get started.
  2. The children can help carry out the measurements.
  3. You will receive an outdoor play package for the schoolyard.
