The municipality, formed through a merger of Vianen, Zederik and Leerdam, wants to do this because figures from the Utrecht Regional Public Health Service (GGD) show that the percentage of overweight children aged 2–3, 5–6, 10–11 and 13–14 in Vijfheerenlanden is higher than elsewhere in the province of Utrecht. The municipality already contributes to programmes such as Lekker Fit! and Trainers voor de Klas, in which sports clubs give guest lessons in their sport at primary and secondary schools. The municipality is also working on the future deployment of community sports coaches. This will certainly include deploying community sports coaches for young people who are overweight.
The municipality also wants to launch campaigns in certain neighbourhoods where it is dealing with unhealthy lifestyles, focusing on the installation of water taps, so that young people choose water instead of soft drinks.
