There are currently several thousand school refusers in the Netherlands: children of compulsory school age who do not attend education for an extended period of time. Despite numerous measures to prevent and reduce school absenteeism, the number of (registered) school refusers has increased in recent years. Greater insight into the circumstances under which students stop attending school is needed to prevent or reduce school absenteeism.

The Kohnstamm Institute conducted research, and Annabel Vaessen, Eke Krijnen and Guuske Ledoux wrote an article for Didactief about the main findings and recommendations.

The three recommendations are:

  • Invest in a good relationship between the school and parents
  • Identify problems and underlying causes at an early stage
  • Pay attention to compliance with the duty of care
