Avond4daagse

The Avond4daagse is an indispensable tradition in the Netherlands. Children, their parents, grandparents: by now, three generations have grown up with the Avond4daagse. Because large groups could no longer walk together due to COVID-19, KWBN, the initiator of the Avond4daagse, introduced the Home Edition in 2020. Participants in this digital version can use an app to create their own routes at a distance of their choice and from a self-selected starting location. They can choose from distances of 2.5 km, 5 km, and 10 km. During the walk, they receive fun messages. The app also keeps track of their achievements. At the end, the official Avond4daagse medal awaits them. Participating in the Avond4daagse – Home Edition is possible from 29 March through 30 June. Children who enjoyed the Avond4daagse can continue being active with the JOGG initiative The Daily Mile at their school, making it a regular part of their daily lives. This way, after these four days, they can enjoy some extra exercise every day.

Distance Ladder

To motivate the children to take part in both The Daily Mile and the Avond4daagse – Home Edition, a distance ladder has been designed. A distance ladder can be put up in the classroom participating in The Daily Mile, displaying the three distances of the Avond4daagse – Home Edition. Every time the children complete their Daily Mile, they ‘climb’ a little higher up the ladder. This allows them to walk the Avond4daagse distances in stages with their classmates while taking part in The Daily Mile.

The Daily Mile

JOGG has been working for years to get children moving, which led to the creation of The Daily Mile initiative. By now, more than 500 primary schools in the Netherlands are participating, but the more children exercise regularly, the better. For children who already do The Daily Mile at school, the Avond4daagse – Home Edition would be a great opportunity to celebrate walking and show their parents how fit they already are thanks to walking 1.6 km every day. It is a fun change of pace for them, and above all, a great challenge.
