The method for special primary education (SBO) is being developed in response to requests from SBO schools. Teachers indicated that the existing teaching materials did not suit the age and level of their pupils. SBO schools often use materials intended for younger groups. As a result, older pupils feel less taken seriously and become demotivated more quickly.
Together with teachers from SBO schools, Veilig Verkeer Nederland is developing the VVN Traffic Education Method for special primary education. The method is practical, easy to understand and sufficiently challenging for older pupils. It is offered in six themes and fully supported digitally. This makes it possible to enlarge images and have texts read aloud. The content of the new teaching materials is fully tailored to the needs of schools and pupils. In addition to regular subjects such as ‘Right of way’ and ‘Crossing the road’, themes such as ‘Travelling by public transport’ and ‘Dealing with peer pressure’ are also covered. These subjects are more closely aligned with the everyday experiences of these somewhat older pupils.
Simple language and short sentences have been chosen. Clear images are also used. Because SBO pupils need this, the material is frequently repeated. The images are calm and uncluttered, showing only the most important information.
The rollout will take place over several school years. Three themes will become available each school year. The first theme will launch at the beginning of the 2026/2027 school year, followed by themes two and three in the same year. In the 2027/2028 school year, themes four, five and six will be released.
