Through the school project 'Stoere Traktaties', AKF lets children in the middle years of primary education experience how fun, tasty and cool it is to treat others with vegetables and fruit. AKF's aim is for this project to eventually become just as commonplace at school as arithmetic and writing.
The emphasis of the school project 'Stoere Traktaties' is on ‘fun’ and experiences. Various studies have shown that communicating through the power of ‘experience’ makes children particularly receptive to a message. Once they have become enthusiastic by discovering vegetables and fruit in a playful way, the rest follows naturally!
From the very start of the project, the children are particularly receptive to the message when the class is treated to an exciting chest. This chest, filled with teaching materials such as workbooks and games, stories, animations and taste experiences, opens up a whole new world for them. Naturally, the children are also treated to plenty of delicious fresh vegetables and fruit to taste and use to make their own cool treats.
The ‘Stoere Traktaties’ project:
- makes children aware that treating others with healthy foods can also be incredibly fun, cool and tasty;
- puts ‘healthy treats’ on the agenda for children, schools and parents;
- gives children enjoyment in preparing food;
- lets children discover which types of vegetables and fruit there are;
- makes children, schools and parents aware of the importance of good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.
The project also contributes to achieving core objectives 34, 35, 37 and 41 (The Dutch Government, 2006). These core objectives are:
- 34 Students learn to take care of their own physical and mental health and that of others.
- 35 Students learn to behave independently in social situations, as road users and as consumers.
- 37 Students learn to behave with respect for generally accepted values and standards.
- 41 Students learn about the structure of plants, animals and people, and about the form and function of their parts.
The four ‘Stoere Traktaties’ teaching modules are implemented by the teacher within the school's regular curriculum. Preparation is minimal (approximately 30 minutes per lesson). The lessons—which are conducted with the whole class—each take approximately 120 minutes. The total time investment for ‘Stoere Traktaties’ is approximately 10 hours.
