Are there enough walking paths and footpaths in the school’s neighborhood? Is there a safe and accessible crossing? Is the schoolyard publicly accessible to children before, during, and after school hours? In other words, where are the opportunities and what could be improved? Respond to the wishes and needs of children and encourage them to be more physically active in an activity-friendly environment.
Who is the Schoolyard Scan for?
A healthy living environment is also an activity-friendly environment. Children must be able to walk or cycle to school safely and be sufficiently encouraged to exercise and play sports on the schoolyard. Would you, as a professional, like to start working on this, or are you already doing so? The Schoolyard Scan gives you the opportunity to gauge the opinions of various stakeholders. When carrying out the scan, involve teachers and civil servants responsible for education, health, sports and physical activity, spatial planning, etc. In addition, consult and involve residents of the neighborhood or district (e.g., parents, pupils, advocates, and sports clubs) to gain new insights. What do they consider important, and how do they view the opportunities for physical activity at and around the school?
Via this page, you can get started with the Schoolyard Scan right away. You will also find a manual there explaining how best to use the Schoolyard Scan.
