Opportunities

“During the coronavirus pandemic, it has been a major challenge to get children moving and keep them active,” says project leader Jelmer Knossen of Rotterdam Sportsupport. “Nevertheless, together we seized as many opportunities as possible to enable young people to participate in sports. For example, we expanded the range of sports activities and distributed them more evenly throughout the neighbourhood. By making better use of gymnasiums, children had to travel shorter distances.”

Healthy School activity

The School Sports Association is a Healthy School activity for primary education and ties in with the theme Physical activity and sports. Initially, sports providers come to the neighbourhood to give children training at or near their school after school hours. Afterwards, they can continue at a permanent club location.

Gymnastics popular

Within the School Sports Association, gymnastics is the largest sport. Knossen: “The classes in Katendrecht, given by gymnastics club ASV Advendo, are the most popular, with 77 children. We hope to be able to offer gymnastics at even more locations in the future.”
