“The King's Games show every year just how enjoyable eating a healthy breakfast, doing sports and exercising can be,” says Richard Krajicek, initiator of the King's Games. “This year, we challenged schools and children to add an extra TWIST to the King's Games. That resulted in even more creativity, fun and exercise. The enthusiasm with which schools, sports providers and children have taken this on is truly inspiring.”
Special day in Roosendaal
A good breakfast gives children the energy to learn, do sports and play. That is why Jumbo once again treated all participating schools to a healthy King's Breakfast this year. In Roosendaal, they also started the day at the breakfast table, where skaters Joep Wennemars, Suzanne Schulting and Angel Daleman joined the Royal Couple.
The Royal Couple then officially opened the King's Games together with children from KPO De Vlindertuin, Richard Krajicek, Zappsport presenters Ron Boszhard & Britt Dekker and Kinderen voor Kinderen. After a spin of the TWISTER – filled with sports equipment and healthy food – the sky turned orange and the active day began.
The Royal Couple coached relay teams and played Oranje Slagballon, a twist on tennis. They also spoke with national partners and local stakeholders about the importance of sport, exercise and healthy nutrition.
More than one million children get moving
The celebrations were not limited to Roosendaal: more than one million children got moving during this year's King's Games. The King's Games have grown into a tradition for children in the Netherlands, the Caribbean part of the Kingdom and Dutch schools abroad.
With the help of the King's Games Sports and Celebration Package, the King's Breakfast and online activity and exercise programmes, children are encouraged to get moving in a cheerful and active way. Schools are also encouraged to collaborate with local sports providers in order to create lasting connections.
