Registration for the Mayors' Breakfast has opened

Starting Monday, 2 June, all municipalities in the Netherlands can once again register for the Mayors' Breakfast. This breakfast takes place during Our Food Week (4 to 11 October 2025). During this week, mayors have breakfast together with a school class at the town hall. Participating municipalities receive a free breakfast box filled with healthy products, put together by the Mayors' Breakfast (part of the National School Breakfast), and fully in accordance with the Wheel of Five.

Jong Leren Eten expands to all provinces
This year is special: for the first time, Jong Leren Eten is participating in all provinces! In 2024, Gelderland successfully experimented with adding fresh, local products to the standard breakfast. Farmers and growers from the region not only supplied products, but also joined the breakfast to tell their story. This brought ‘the origin of our food’ literally to the table!

This gives children the opportunity to:

get to know the mayor,
enjoy a healthy breakfast,
discover where their food comes from,
ask the farmer or grower questions,
and, of course, taste what real local food is like.

The responses from the participating municipalities in Gelderland were very positive. It was seen as a real added value that a local farmer or grower was present at the breakfast.

Joint commitment to food education
Thanks to the excellent cooperation with the organisation of the Mayors' Breakfast, Jong Leren Eten can implement this approach in all provinces this year. Jong Leren Eten is working closely with local JOGG partners and with the Healthy School Advisers of the GGD public health services.

This year, Jong Leren Eten is also making an extra effort to involve educational farmers. In this way, Jong Leren Eten connects the Mayors' Breakfast with existing educational projects—for example, taking the class to a farm for an educational lesson. Jong Leren Eten is supported in this by partners LTO Noord, ZLTO and LLTB in recruiting enthusiastic farmers and growers.

Municipalities can register for the Mayors' Breakfast from 2 June via www.burgemeestersontbijt.nl. The breakfasts will take place on 7, 8, 9 or 10 October 2025.

Our Food Week

From 3 to 10 October 2026, it is Our Food Week. A great opportunity to focus with your class at primary school on where our food comes from, how it is made and why healthy and sustainable choices are important. Food education allows pupils not only to learn, but especially to experience. That is why various organisations are joining forces to support schools with inspiring activities, teaching materials and practical tools. Examples include the Mayors’ Breakfast, a free visit to a farm, or shopping vouchers for cooking in the classroom.
