Healthy and tasty canteen snack

“Create your ideal healthy canteen snack.” This was the challenge that secondary school students in Flevoland took on to come up with a healthy and tasty canteen snack for their school. The snack had to meet the 5 G’s: Enjoyment, Good value, Healthy, Convenience and Green. Students were also asked to create a campaign to promote the snack among their fellow students.

The final in the kitchen of Aeres University of Applied Sciences Almere

The teams with the ‘Tortiga wrap’ (Porteum Lelystad), the ‘Hummus sandwich with roasted vegetables’ (Aeres VMBO Almere) and the ‘Potato soup!’ (Emelwerda College Emmeloord) were invited to the final at Aeres University of Applied Sciences Almere. With the guidance of cooking expert Stijn Steenmeijer from The Waste to Success, they were able to further refine their snacks. The students then presented their final products to the jury, and of course there was tasting involved. The jury chose the Tortiga Wrap because it is an easy, tasty and affordable wrap filled with healthy ingredients.

Students at the helm of the canteen

For every school, it is a challenge: how do you provide a canteen with a healthy range of products that is also so appealing to students that they do not flock outside the school in search of a cheap snack? The School Canteen Challenge was launched in 2021 as part of the Jong Leren Eten Flevoland programme. The challenge offers an accessible and straightforward way to give students more control over their own canteen.
