Free guest lessons

The guest lessons are free and tie in with subjects such as biology and geography. They are taught by one of IVN Zeeland’s education staff members. In an interactive way, they introduce students to Oosterschelde National Park. By learning about and experiencing nature, IVN Zeeland aims to spark curiosity and contribute to environmentally conscious behaviour.

The lessons have been developed for students in years 1 to 3 of vmbo, havo and vwo. At the same time, IVN Zeeland is working on a continuous learning pathway for secondary education. IVN Zeeland is keen to hear about the experiences of both students and teachers, so that it can continue to develop the programme.

Are one or more of these themes already on the schedule? Then this is a great opportunity to use this guest lesson as an extension or supplement to the curriculum.

About the continuous learning pathway

Oosterschelde National Park is working on a continuous learning pathway consisting of three pillars. These pillars complement and reinforce one another and offer a varied and comprehensive educational programme. Each pillar can be used separately, but together they form a powerful and engaging learning experience.

1. Nature education in the classroom

Bring nature into the classroom with our teaching materials and interactive lessons. Students are challenged to explore nature, understand biodiversity and promote sustainability.

2. Forest ranger/expert in the classroom

Have a real forest ranger or expert visit the classroom and talk about the special flora and fauna of Oosterschelde National Park. Students have the opportunity to ask questions, hear stories and learn from the experiences of a professional.

3. Wind in your hair

Go out and experience it for yourself. Excursions offer students the unique opportunity to explore the natural environment. They can get to work in the field themselves, observing, measuring and investigating. These hands-on experiences encourage the discovery and understanding of nature.

Oosterschelde National Park lesson resources

Oosterschelde National Park also has five lesson resources:

  • Zilt lesson resource: Discover the saline world of the Oosterschelde and learn about the unique flora and fauna that thrive in this brackish ecosystem.
  • Paint the Oosterschelde lesson resource: Encourage creativity and observation skills while students draw and sketch the beautiful nature of the Oosterschelde.
  • Migratory Birds in the Oosterschelde lesson resource: Every year, billions of birds fly tens of thousands of kilometres from their wintering grounds to their breeding grounds and back again. Can you imagine it? Students delve into bird migration, perhaps one of the most fascinating phenomena in our natural world.
  • Underwater Life in the Oosterschelde lesson resource: Experience the underwater world in the tidal pools! They are located at the foot of the dike. The water remains in them, making it easy to take a look at the underwater world. Without getting wet!
  • Biodiversity Awareness lesson resource with additional information: How do you explain to students what biodiversity is and why it is so important? With this interactive lesson resource, we take your class into the world of mudflats, salt marshes and sandbanks of Oosterschelde National Park. The lesson starts in the classroom with a brief introduction and an educational video, and ends outside, where students conduct their own species survey using the ObsIdentify app.
