Intern Justin Koemans explains what the profile entails in school practice. “It means that, in addition to the regular teaching hours, you also receive a number of hours for specific tasks. You can spend those hours on what the school needs in the area of exercise and health. This could involve drawing up a policy plan, but also checking whether it is being properly implemented. Or getting to work on ideas from teachers or parents. Everything is based on the idea of improving health at school. In addition, we also organise clinics, for example, where we can put into practice what we have learned at the teacher training college.”
Koemans now has plans to expand physical activity further. “In the implementation plan, we included that we would like to create activity areas in the school. This is important because you notice that there are children who are very active in the classroom. Those children need to release their energy from time to time. That is why, after the May holiday, we want to run a pilot lasting a few weeks with an activity area in the school. If it works, we want to create several activity areas in the school. They could be in the corridor, but perhaps even in the classroom. Of course, we need to discuss that with the teachers and the school management.”
