Geke Verspille explains how the King's Games Package came about: “We support the organisation of the King's Games in its objective – organising a nationwide sports day to show children how important and fun it is to exercise – and believe it is very important that children enjoy or come to enjoy exercise and a healthy lifestyle. That is why we responded to the call in 2013 to help schools organise their sports day. Linda and I put together a script, devised a number of games, developed a certificate, placemat and other fun materials, and offered these to schools in the Netherlands and Dutch schools abroad.”
Website
In 2014, the King's Games Package was expanded with a website: www.koningsspelenpakket.nl. As a result, the number of requests increased enormously. The package is not only downloaded by schools; nurseries, out-of-school care centres, hospitals and care institutions also make good use of the downloadable materials. In recent years, requests have come from no fewer than 160 different countries.
Every year, a new package is put together with great enthusiasm. All the games are given a royal touch, with names such as ‘The King's Beard’ and ‘Maze in the Palace Cellar’. Linda Thuijs says: “Because users receive bonus material when they leave a response on the website, we know how much our package is appreciated. The responses are enthusiastic. For example, people say: ‘this saves a lot of work!’ and ‘Super package! Very concrete, fresh, clear and ready to use! We’re very happy with it!’.”
Special target groups
When putting together the King's Games Package, an effort is made to take the wishes of the various target groups into account. Every year, the basic package is expanded with a number of additional materials that can be downloaded or purchased for a small fee. These include Marble Gates, as well as extra game cards, the Wilhelmus in pictographic script and a genuine Royal Quartet card game. The collaboration with external parties is new, further broadening the range on offer.
The games are selected so that there is a suitable offering for every group. In 2016, Leraar24 made recordings at a Mytyl school. They also use the King's Games Package there, but use the special game cards. These game cards have been adapted so that children who use a wheelchair can also participate. Seeing the enthusiasm with which this group of children took part in the King's Games is a great incentive to put together another fantastic special package this year.
