The discussion will focus on how schools can support families living in poverty and which signs may indicate financial difficulties. Together, we will look for good examples, inspiration and practical guidance. To ensure a productive discussion, participation is limited to a maximum of twenty people.
The Netherlands Youth Institute has a special landing page about poverty. It contains practical information for young people, parents, professionals and policymakers, among others. There is also a special section for education professionals with information about:
- Providing support and a listening ear
- Recognizing poverty
- Referring people to support services
- Making plans with the whole school
- Practical tips for schools
Inspiration can also be found in the episode of the Vereniging Openbaar Onderwijs podcast Diversiteit in het onderwijs about poverty. In this episode, Sanne Spiero (project leader at the Child Poverty Alliance) talks with Evita Lagerwaard and Inge Özertem-Prevoo about what schools can do to help children and parents who have less money to spend and to give these children equal opportunities.
