Ninth edition of National Outdoor Classroom Day on 9 April

On Tuesday 9 April, IVN Nature Education is organising National Outdoor Classroom Day. On this day, schools swap their classrooms for the fresh air outdoors. Sign up and discover with your class where our food comes from during the Great Potato Lesson! Or get started with one of the 70 other outdoor lessons. If you register your class before 19 March, you will have a chance this year to win 1 of 12 Potato Packages or even a fully catered outdoor lesson with forest ranger Tim from KRO-NCRV.

Three examples of outdoor lessons

On the IVN Nature Education website, you will find a wide variety of outdoor lessons. Below are three examples.

Swedish relay game

With this game for language lessons for grades 3 to 8, pupils practise recognising spelling categories.

Mushroom maths

With this game for maths lessons for grades 3 to 6, pupils learn to solve simple addition or subtraction problems from memory.

How climate-proof is your school playground?

With this game for geography, nature and technology, you investigate with your class whether your school playground is climate-proof.

The IVN Nature Education website features 70 lesson packages. You can sort them by duration, location and season, among other criteria.

Win an outdoor lesson with forest ranger Tim

Win a fully catered outdoor lesson with forest ranger Tim from KRO-NCRV! After Outdoor Classroom Day on 9 April, he will take one class outdoors on an educational adventure. The lesson will take place at your school on 10 April 2024 and will last half a day. Want to take part? Together with School Garden Week

This year, Outdoor Classroom Day focuses on food. The organisations are therefore joining forces with School Garden Week. This week runs from 8 to 12 April. You can find the programme here.

Great Potato Lesson

A special lesson has been developed for Outdoor Classroom Day, focusing on the potato. This ‘Great Potato Lesson’ is also suitable for schools without a school garden.

Ten tips for the Golden Weeks in primary education

After every holiday, a group goes through certain phases in the process of group formation. The first weeks at the beginning of the school year are called the Golden Weeks. These weeks are particularly suitable for laying a foundation for good group formation and a pleasant atmosphere. Stichting School & Veiligheid offers ten tips.

Our Food Week

From 3 to 10 October 2026, it is Our Food Week. A great opportunity to focus with your class at primary school on where our food comes from, how it is made and why healthy and sustainable choices are important. Food education allows pupils not only to learn, but especially to experience. That is why various organisations are joining forces to support schools with inspiring activities, teaching materials and practical tools. Examples include the Mayors’ Breakfast, a free visit to a farm, or shopping vouchers for cooking in the classroom.

Would you like more water to be drunk in the new school year? Then put tap water in the spotlight with your class as a healthy and sustainable thirst quencher during National Tap Water Day on Wednesday 30 September. This way, your pupils will discover why tap water is healthy and how to turn it into a festive drink!
