“The aim of Onderwijsgezond is to help primary schools provide education in the area of a healthy lifestyle,” says initiator Jeroen Philipsen. “Children learn most from their peers. By cooking together at school with upper-grade pupils and having them present the meal to the classes, younger children become much more willing to try and taste it. We see that children who are initially hesitant gradually become more willing to eat along with the others. The results are truly encouraging.” And that is just as well, because lifestyle-related problems among children are becoming increasingly alarming. Pediatricians recently reported, for example, a sudden and substantial increase in the number of children with type 2 diabetes (adult-onset diabetes!!).
